Dr. Reuben Thuo, a trained General Surgeon and a Fellow of the college of Surgeons of East Africa (FCSA), has experience spanning over 20 years in strengthening management of human resource in health. He has been a medical superintendent in a level 5 hospital in Kenya. In academia at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), he was the Founding Dean School of Medicine and currently the Principal, College of health Sciences (CoHES).
Dr. Thuo was involved in the development of the Digital Health Applied Research Centre (DHARC), through which he has been instrumental in leading Partnerships through various Projects, he also has built a skilled and dedicated DHARC-team with expertise from a range of multi-disciplinaries.
Dr. Thuo is a member of the JKUAT COVID-19 response modelling Team and the National COVID-19 Modelling Technical Committee, Modelling of the COVID-19 experience on behalf of the Kenyan government (supporting the ministry of health). Dr. Thuo has opened up several linkages and networks with various institutions locally and internationally some of which include the JKUAT representative to the National Assistive Technology Centre of Excellence task force funded by World Health Organization.
He has been the Principal investigator in some USAID funded projects; Health Informatics Governance and Data Analytics (HIGDA) project, Design and implementation of the Kenya electronic medical records system Project undertaken by University of Washington and ITECH-Kenya and JKUAT project, The strengthening Measuring Learning and Accountability in Counties (CMLAP 2) project among others. He has played a key role in FIND funded projects; Optimization of diagnostic service networks for the health of women and children in Kenya project, Assessing the use of digital tools to strengthen COVID-19 screening, testing, contact tracing and patient management in Kenya project among others. Currently he leads the KEHMIS III project, a CDC funded project.
His research is supported by grant funding from the Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He has been Involved in the development of over 20 curriculums in the College of Health Sciences, JKUAT, more than 25 publications and 3 books.
